The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Education

Abstract

Education is an important sector of Society. In a country like India, which is now the most populous one, various challenges in education are prevalent. Extending the reach of education to all students who have the zeal to learn, dealing with situations like the pandemic where face-to-face teaching-learning is not possible, dealing with a largely populated classroom, keeping eye on the progress of each student, providing individualized instruction, giving immediate feedback and even assessment and grading of a large number of students after examination create challenging situation before the teachers and instructors. Artificial Intelligence could be a solution to it. Even the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 envisages the inclusion and teaching of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education. This paper attempts to present the value of AI in the Education Sector, along with showing in what way AI facilitates the Educator's teaching process by doing such tasks as personalized teaching, immediate feedback, assessment, grading, etc. Artificial Intelligence software and apps, such as chatbots, intelligent tutoring systems, and intelligent cameras for automatically taking attendance, can reduce the extra burden on teachers and make the teaching and learning process more engaging. Additionally, the paper discusses the advantages and challenges of utilizing artificial intelligence in education.
